1,271 employees affected by Canva's restructuring

Canva is restructuring in a way that affects 1,271 employees, about 22 percent of its workforce, chief executive Melanie Perkins told staff in a memo first reported by Bloomberg. The plan includes job cuts, role changes and relocation to central hubs, and it merges product, growth and platform teams while removing management layers. Perkins cited the company’s first growth slowdown in a decade and a structure that blurred ownership of cross-team work. She pointed to changing technology and customer expectations but did not name AI as a cause. Canva has not said how many of the 1,271 will lose their jobs.

Alan's takeCanva’s memo blames slowing growth and too many layers. Slowing growth is a symptom, not a cause. Canva launched in 2013 to make design easy for people who aren’t designers. Thirteen years later, anyone can type a sentence and get a graphic. Canva made everyone a designer. AI made everyone a designer without Canva. Beware the AI-enabled disruption.
